An Interview with Peter Gosling, A Talented Professional Barber and Owner of Glassbox Barbershop
Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started in the industry?
As a young person, I was headed in the wrong direction. Skateboarding culture, fashion and music inspired me. My mom suggested hairstyling as a career that would allow me to use those influences and be creative in a different way! So, at the age of 18, I got my first job at a salon! I trained with some of the best global companies, and here I stand, almost two decades later.

What were some challenges you had to overcome?
Where do I begin? Becoming a true entrepreneur is overcoming something every day. Looking back on what you have overcome keeps you believing you can do more.

What achievements are you most proud of?
In 2015, I started Glassbox to create a better, higher-end and more cutting-edge men's hairdressing business. We were one of the first shops to offer longer haircut appointments and more modern, innovative styles.
Our clientele consists mainly of men, but we have a significant LGBTQ+ customer base because we offer a variety of cuts and provide a safe, respectful environment.

What advice would you give new barbers starting in the business?
Stay in one place for an extended period and build your clientele before you make any serious decisions.

What's your favorite barbering tool (make/model) and why?
JRL Clippers. They are great all-around – sharp, durable, long-lasting and reliable for professional barbers.

What are your favorite hair styling products and why?
I really like Ceremony Supply. They make quality products that work.

What haircuts and styles are trending right now?
The mod cut and shaggy hairstyle are coming on hot as we transition away from the mullet.

What's your favorite style(s) to cut?
When you love cutting hair, all hairstyles are fun, so I can't pinpoint just one! I love seeing the transformation between the before and after.

What do you love about barbering?
As cringeworthy as it sounds, I enjoy connecting with the people sitting in the chair. You get to talk to so many different people.

If you could go back in time, what would you do differently?
Nothing. I live with no regrets, only reflection of mistakes to make me smarter, stronger and an asset to my country, county and community.
